Five offline RPGs that don't need a signal
Offline RPGs are a small but wonderful category. When a game commits to working without a connection, it usually means the developer trusts their story and systems to stand on their own. Here are the traits I look for.
First, local saving that never fails. Nothing kills a long RPG faster than losing an hour of progress because a server hiccuped. The good ones save the moment you leave a screen.
Second, combat that respects short sessions. Turn-based systems tend to win here because you can pause mid-fight and pick up later. Emberhollow Tales does this beautifully — you can close it mid-battle and resume without a scratch.
Third, a world worth returning to. The best offline RPGs give you side paths and small stories that make you want to wander. That's what turns a commute game into a real habit.
If a game nails those three, the lack of internet stops being a limitation and starts feeling like a feature.
